THE ORATORY OF SAINT JOSEPH OF MONTREAL

The Saint Joseph's Oratory Montreal, Quebec, is the largest church in Canada. Is located at number 3800 of Queen Mary Road, in Côte-des-Neiges.

The Oratory is a Roman Catholic basilica located on the northern slope of Mount Royal which construction began in 1904 under the leadership of Brother André (Alfred Bessette), who was the instigator of all this huge work.

He began his work there very early, first as a goalie, but also had to wash the floors and windows, cleaning lamps, firewood and deal with the role as the messenger. Eventually won uncontested reputation as a healer of the sick, while stressing his good nature and cheerfulness. Haircut children's choir and with the money he received for it helped to finance the construction.

first built a small chapel on the hillside next to Notre Dame College. Later, in 1917, he built a church called "The Crypt", with capacity for a thousand people seated.

In 1924 was inaugurated the construction of the basilica, completed in 1967. Its dome is the second largest of its kind in the world, lagging behind only St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

is dedicated to Joseph of Nazareth, whom Brother André credited all of his alleged miracles. Many of them were related to a certain power of healing and many pilgrims (paralyzed, blind, sick, etc.) Came to the basilica, including many Protestants.

Today
amazed by the number of visitors from different faiths and cultures who come to the chapel. There is a wooden deck ladder to climb his knees the pilgrims who come to give thanks.

The basilica is a wall covered, as an exhibition, with images those to whom he allegedly cured. Pope John Paul II acknowledged the authenticity of the miracles and beatified Brother André in 1982.

A relic in the church museum contains Brother André's heart, which he claimed as a protection for the basilica. Visitors can also see the marble sarcophagus where his body as well as several statues representing it in their daily tasks. There is a book signing for those who want their sanctification.

From the oratory you have a magnificent view of Montreal.

In one of the grounds of the chapel, up a slope, is represented the way of Christ to the cross by statues.

More than two million visitors and pilgrims visit the Oratory every year. On October 19, 2004, Saint Joseph celebrated its centenary of existence.

As a curious note I comment that Cuba signed a guest book in the living room where the sarcophagus, and I had it signed by his friends companions. Then he realized that it was not that, but a book of signatures calling for his canonization.

Either way worth it. On October 30, 2010, Brother André was canonized as a saint of the Catholic Church in a huge ceremony at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, attended by thousands of visitors and pilgrims from around the world.
